Welcome!

This class will attempt to develop your academic reading skills. We will especially work on improving your vocabulary knowledge and your ability to guess the meaning of words from the context.

Course Overview

“Advanced English Reading” is designed to prepare teacher-trainees for the reading demands of graduate school and provide
greater insight into the importance of reading development within the second language (L2) context with an emphasis on
reading techniques and critical reading skills. Practical reading (and some writing) skills and strategies are emphasized via
academic text materials and selected teaching materials.

Class Notes

Class notes will be added on a weekly basis for review.

Expectations

Attendance/Participation
Attendance is mandatory: Participants who arrive to class 10 minutes or more after class begins will be considered late. Participants who are late 3 times will receive 1 absence. Any participant who misses 1/4 of all class meetings will receive an F. Mastery of the ideas and concepts of this course requires engagement and discussion. If you are not in class, you miss that opportunity to exchange ideas. Moreover, participation is also essential. Just coming to class is not enough. I expect all participants to be active in class discussion and lectures as well as to complete all oral and written assignments.

Reading Journals
A reading journal is a ‘reader response’ to the material you’ve just read. You should choose an academic article (no newspapers, e-papers, etc.) about reading; that is, the academic articles you choose to read must have a ‘reading’ English education relationship. Please ask me if you are uncertain about any aspect of this assignment. In general, search for an area of reading that you would like to know more about (intensive, extensive, assessment, jigsaws, lesson planning, etc.). Again, keep in mind that all articles must have an English education relationship. Please ask me if you are uncertain; there is a little bit of flexibility for this assignment.
